Cotuit, Mass. – Jarren Advincula (Cal Berkeley) has been unbelievable, to say the least, for the Cotuit Kettleers this summer. No matter if the team is firing on all cylinders or in a slump, Advincula always seems to deliver with clutch base hits.
The middle infielder has been leading the CCBL in hits and average for most of the season, but coming into the final week, it was a race between Ethan Conrad (Bourne) and him. After collecting seven hits in the last three games and both batters getting a rest day on Sunday. Advincula had secured his crown as the 2024 Batting Champion with a .392 batting average, the fourth highest in Kettleer history.
“It’s just a blessing, man. I’m very faithful and I want to thank God for everything he’s done for me this year,” Advincula said. “We’ve been winning a lot; I’ve found a lot of success and I’ve been blessed to have such great teammates and coach [Mike] Roberts with me for the summer. It’s just truly a blessing.”
It’s very common for players to face adversity and learning curves when they come to the CCBL. It’s simply the best amateur summer league in America with the best collection of talent while playing games six games a week at tough ballparks.
However, that was never really the case for the Cal Berkeley product. He leads his team in multi-hit games (19) while going hitless just 13 times. Overall, Advincula collected 51 hits while only striking out seven times, both league bests. He clubbed one home run with 17 RBI and a .448 OBP.
He was even selected as the starting second baseman in the CCBL All-Star Game, where he got on base in his lone at-bat while also stealing a bag.
“Jarren is an old-fashioned baseball player who always makes good contact,” Roberts said. “It’s no surprise to me that he led the league in hits, he battles like crazy against some really good pitching, some of the best I’ve seen up here in my time. Just extremely happy for him, it’s a high honor to lead this league in batting average.”
Advincula is having one of the best contact seasons not just in Cotuit history, but the Cape Cod League as well. Since the league started keeping stats in 1963, the Santa Clara, California, native holds the 14th-best batting average in a single season, the fourth-highest in Cotuit history and the highest average since 2015.
It’s impressive enough to read those numbers, but to do it at just 19 years old is astonishing. In a league where a lot of the best players are upperclassmen, No. 7 on Cotuit defies the odds and continues to be an offensive catalyst for Roberts’ squad.
Looking into next season, the rising sophomore looks to elevate his game to a new level at Cal following his great experience in Cotuit, however, it’s not over yet. The Kettleers will play host to Wareham on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a chance to play in the West Division Championship.
“This summer has taught me how to be more consistent in my work ethic,” Advincula said. “I’ve maintained a consistent work schedule and I think the results have shown, along with some minor adjustments that I can take to college. There’s been a learning curve every day, but luckily, it’s been minor, and I’ve been able to get better from it. There’s still more summer ball to be played though, and we as a team want to win it all.”
