BREWSTER, Mass. — And just like that, the perfect game was over.
Brewster Whitecaps starting pitcher Gaines Estridge (Air Force) allowed a one-out single to Wareham Gatemen right fielder Carter Groen (La Salle) in the fifth inning, the first batter to reach against him. The right-hander collected six strikeouts across six scoreless innings, but the Whitecaps still could not manage a run until the bottom of the ninth.
Whitecaps manager Jamie Shevchik described the contest as a “tickle fight for nine innings.” While Estridge was perfect through 4 1/3 innings, Gatemen starter Peyton Lee (Arkansas) no-hit the East Division’s No. 2 seed through his four-inning outing. Nolan Foster (Abilene Christian) continued the dominance with two innings of one-hit ball and three strikeouts. It was not until the bottom of the ninth that Brewster (21-8-3) finally loaded the bases with fewer than two outs.
Holden Pantier (Georgia Tech) singled to open the ninth, followed shortly by Tryston McCladdie’s (Clemson) single up the middle. Six straight balls followed the early-inning pressure. Gatemen manager Ryan Smyth intentionally walked pinch hitter Jacob Lee (Virginia Commonwealth) then watched leadoff hitter Michael Torres (Miami) work into a 3-0 count with the bases loaded. Two strikes later, Torres was still in the driver’s seat.
“I’m confident in, like, not striking out, especially 3-2,” the Miami Hurricane said. “I saw the ball very well the whole game, and before the inning even started I said I was going to walk it off and I got the opportunity to do it.”
Torres capitalized on the opportunity, drawing his team-leading 18th walk of the season to force in the winning run. Still, Brewster won the game through its pitching and defense. While the victory marked the Whitecaps’ fifth shutout of the year, it was their only shutout in which the offense scored fewer than six runs.
The three-man staff completed nine scoreless innings, allowing three hits and walking only one batter. Estridge, Otto Espinoza (Florida State) and Colt Peterson (Stanford) were lights out in front of the Stony Brook faithful, making up for the lack of offensive fireworks with a pitching duel to be marveled at.
Peterson closed the game and best encapsulated the trio’s mojo. The Stanford right-hander tried to start and stay ahead of the Gatemen, but when he fell behind all three batters he faced, he simply attacked. The day’s closer refused to surrender any free bases, forcing two routine popouts and a groundout to third.
Espinoza did more of the same, bridging the two innings between Estridge and Peterson. The right-hander, making his second appearance, allowed only a walk while collecting three strikeouts across two hitless innings. With the postseason eight games away, bullpen strength could be the difference between hardware and going home.
But the real champion of the mound, the workhorse of the day, was Air Force’s Gaines Estridge.
Perfect through 4 1/3 innings. One pitch short of 80 while throwing fewer than 70% of his pitches for strikes. Estridge struck out 41 batters and walked 16 across 64 2/3 innings during his junior season this spring, but also allowed 93 hits.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native has never been afraid to attack hitters, but against the wooden bats of the Cape Cod Baseball League, he has discovered success in his pitch-to-contact abilities.
“Third time throwing [on Cape] and I have not seen [the defense] miss a ball, and there have been some incredible plays behind me,” Estridge said.
Zero-error baseball complements a contact pitcher the way roommates Dane Harvey (Ohio State) and Torres complement each other. Both work on their own; together, they are something special.
Harvey recorded five putouts at first base, while Torres patrolled center field and hauled in four of Wareham’s five flyouts. Brewster backed its pitching trio perfectly, posting its 11th zero-error game of the season. The Whitecaps are 9-1-1 when they do not commit an error, likely the club’s most reliable formula for success.
The Whitecaps remain home Friday to play Orleans for the third time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
