Nothing goes right for Bourne in 12-0 loss to Hyannis

HYANNIS, Mass. — It was partially déjà vu at McKeon Park on Friday evening.

The partial part was due to weather, as rain once again played a factor. On July 8 against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, the game featured a 90-minute delay midway through the contest due to heavy rain, but Bourne emerged victorious 12-6 behind elite offensive production throughout the lineup.

17 days later rain showed once again, having the contest pushed back an hour from its original 6 p.m. start time. The difference in this one was the Harbor Hawks had the bats going, smoking the Braves 12-0 behind a nine-run fourth inning that resulted in a mercy-rule in the seventh inning.

Hyannis got the scoring started in the third, as Brody Briggs (Arizona State) walked and Devin Mitchell (Florence-Darlington Tech) got hit by a pitch. The tandem advanced on a wild pitch from Colin Fisher (Arkansas) — Briggs scored on an RBI groundout from Owen Prince (Virginia Military Institute) to make it a 1-0 game.

After the lone tally in the third, the Harbor Hawks blew it open in their ensuing hacks at the plate. Jake Schaffner (North Dakota State) walked and got to third after a successful hit-and-run single by Deiten Lachance (Oklahoma). Schaffner scored on a throwing error from Fisher on a ball hit in play by Mitchell, who reached second.

Prince then reached on an infield single, where a single from Parker Brosius (Georgia Tech) scored three runs in part due to a throwing error by Cal Sefcik (Cincinnati) in left field, taking second on the throw to the plate. Following an RBI single from Jayce Dobie (Nevada) and a two-run double by Lachance, Hyannis left the frame with a whopping 10-0 lead.

The Harbor Hawks then loaded the bases in the fifth after a pair of walks from Briggs and Prince as well as a single from Brosius. Briggs scored after an RBI walk from Jeff Lougee (Duke) to make it an 11-0 game.

Lachance drilled his fourth hit of the game in the sixth, scorching a double to left field. A single from Myles Davis (State College of Florida) moved in Charlie Bates (Stanford), who pinch ran for Lachance. An RBI sacrifice fly from Briggs scored Bates, extending the lead to 12-0 in favor of the Harbor Hawks.

Chris Diaz (Florida Gulf Coast) closed the door for Hyannis in the seventh, giving up zero runs to end the contest early, with his squad knocking off Bourne, 12-0.

Key moment

Hyannis poured on nine runs in the fourth off a trio of Bourne pitchers, putting the game out of reach early.
