Another season means another year where a handful of Bourne Braves have been recognized at the midway point of the campaign for stellar performances.
Seven Braves were selected on Saturday to participate in the 2025 Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game presented by Milton CAT, which will take place next Saturday at Red Wilson Field, home of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, at 4:05 p.m. with the gates opening at 11:45 a.m.
The five from Bourne that made the cut for their work at the plate and in the field were Logan Hughes (Texas Tech), Kade Lewis (Wake Forest), Jon LeGrande (St. John’s), Kuhio Aloy (Arkansas) and Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt).
Rounding out the crew of Braves that made the All-Star Game are Jonathan Stevens (UAB) and Will Whelan (Minnesota).
Hughes has been a versatile piece in the field, playing both first base and both left and right field, as well as being a threat at the plate, batting .294 with 20 hits, 13 walks and 11 runs. He mashed a solo home run in the ninth inning against the Orleans Firebirds on June 24 to propel the Braves to a 2-1 victory on the road at Eldredge Park.
Lewis has consistently been one of the stronger bats in the lineup, slugging a batting average of .306 with 22 hits and 14 RBIs to go along with a 337-foot home run he ripped against the Firebirds on July 2.
“I think it’s just being situational — understanding the situation and doing what you have to do to get the job done,” Lewis said after the win against Orleans.
Field manager Scott Landers labeled LeGrande as a “spark plug” early in the season, and the title is well suited for the work that LeGrande has done this summer. He’s utilized his speed on the bases to earn extra bases via hits and stolen bags as well as hawking down balls in the outfield that looked like they would fall for extra-base knocks. LeGrande is hitting .299 with 20 hits, 12 runs, 11 RBIs and eight stolen bases.
“I’m just taking it one day at a time and being where my feet are,” LeGrande said after a tie against Y-D on June 16.
Aloy arrived midseason for the Braves, but he made his presence known at the plate right away, pinch-hitting the day after he arrived against Cotuit and ripping a ball into the outfield for a base hit. The success in the batter’s box for him has been constant, batting a whopping .344 with 11 hits, six RBIs and six walks through 10 games, including two home runs. He will also participate in the Home Run Contest.
“Just going up there ready to swing,” Aloy said after last Saturday's victory over Wareham.
Waite didn’t see a lot of time his freshman year at Vanderbilt, but he’s made the most of his opportunity on the Cape. He’s showcased his elite glove at shortstop and has been a weapon at the leadoff spot, netting a .290 batting average with 18 hits, nine RBIs, nine stolen bases and seven walks.
“The more at-bats I get, the more comfortable I get in the box,” Waite said on June 21 after a win over Chatham. “I didn’t get a lot of at-bats this spring, so getting these at-bats is really helping me be comfortable, and just help my teammates in the long run to win baseball games.”
Stevens has been lights out for the Braves with his .082 ERA through his six games that he’s taken the mound. He’s tossed 11 innings where he’s given up just one run and has dialed up 13 strikeouts.
Whelan has been another source of electricity out of the bullpen, having also given up just one run in his six games that he’s stepped on the rubber, netting a .068 ERA with 11 strikeouts.
