Easton Carmichael (Oklahoma) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Will Tippett (Brewster) hit his second home run of the summer, but Brewster topped Yarmouth-Dennis, 13-5, on Saturday at Stony Brook Field.
Brewster erased its seven-game losing skid and picked up its first win since July 17. The Whitecaps were 0-10-1 entering the contest and scored their second-most runs in a game with 13 on 11 hits including a two-run homer from Brody Donay (Florida).
The Whitecaps brought the season series between the two East Division foes to 2-1-2 and stayed alive in the playoff chase at 13-24-2 with 28 points. Nick Dumesnil (Cal Baptist) propelled Brewster back to the playoff picture after going 2-for-4 with three runs.
Y-D pitchers have allowed at least 10 hits in each of the last three games and issued eight walks against Brewster, which scored nine runs from the sixth to the eighth. Y-D gave up its most runs in a game this summer.
Ethan Firoved (Pittsburgh) allowed the most runs in a start with four over four innings despite going the last three frames scoreless. Whitecaps hitters walked four times and tallied four hits against the left-hander.
Jacob Marlowe (Florida State) made his eighth appearance and second start of the summer with the Whitecaps. The left-hander gave up three runs on six hits, which are both season highs, and struck out three in his second-longest outing.
Brewster took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Firoved struggled with command. The left-hander loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a hit before the Whitecaps' four through seven hitters each tallied an RBI. Firoved walked in the first run, induced a fielder’s choice for the second, Donay tallied an RBI single and Drew Faurot (Florida State) hit a sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox responded with three in the top of the third as Gavin Gallaher (North Carolina) sparked the inning with a one-out single. Michael Ball (Nevada) recorded a hit in his third straight game with an RBI double and Tippett launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer as Y-D cut the lead to 4-3.
Firoved settled in after the four-run first and posted three scoreless innings from the second to the fourth while allowing just two base runners on two singles in that span. Brooks Ey (Bryant) made his debut with the Red Sox in the fifth and struck out a pair.
Carmichael began the top of the sixth with his 10th double of the summer and ranks second in the Cape League. Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) posted his first hit with Y-D on a bunt single and executed a double steal with Carmichael, who dashed home from third after the throw went to second to tie the game at 4-4.
Donay struck again in the bottom of the sixth and crushed a 2-1 pitch from Ey over the center field fence for a two-run homer. The Gator hit his sixth home run of the summer as part of a three-RBI performance and put the Whitecaps back in front, 6-4.
Brewster extended its lead in the seventh as Jakob Russell (Long Beach State) entered out of the bullpen for Y-D. The Whitecaps batted around and scored five in the inning to take an 11-4 lead on a wild pitch, sacrifice fly, two-run error and an infield single.
Carmichael drove in Skylar King (West Virginia) from second after he pinch ran for Ethan Petry (South Carolina), who extended his on-base streak to 17 games. Carmichael tallied his 23rd RBI of the season and brought the score to 11-5.
Brewster added two more in the bottom of the eighth against Gavin Jones (Kent State) with an RBI groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch to take the penultimate regular season game, 13-5.
