Wehiwa Aloy (Arkansas) hit a three-run home run and Jake Brown (LSU) hit the first Red Sox blast of the season as Yarmouth-Dennis used a five-run seventh to beat Falmouth, 10-8, on Thursday at Red Wilson Field.
It was the second straight game Y-D posted nine or more runs, as six different Red Sox recorded a hit, including Aloy, who had a game-high three RBI. Anthony Martinez (UC Irvine) had a dominant Red Sox debut, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a go-ahead double in the seventh. Brown tallied three hits, including his home run, and a pair of RBI in a 3-for-4 performance.
Y-D scored at least one run against four of the five Commodores pitchers, including starter Tate McKee (Georgia Tech), who allowed three runs in three innings. Y-D continued its stretch of timely hitting with a 5-for-11 mark with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox and Commodores both tallied 10 hits as the former posted double-digit runs for the first time in 2024 and pushed its record to 4-1.
6-foot-9 right-hander Jason Reitz (St. Mary’s) got his first start with the Red Sox and battled around five walks in three-plus innings and two runs allowed. Reitz dealt three scoreless innings and worked into the fourth until he loaded the bases and was charged with two runs.
Y-D opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Brown entered for Jonathan Kim (Michigan) as a pinch-hitter and capitalized with Aloy (Arkansas) on first. Brown took a 1-0 pitch and smashed his first first career Cape League home run over the wall in right-center field to give Y-D an early 2-0 lead.
The Red Sox scored in consecutive innings for the second straight game as Easton Carmichael’s (Oklahoma) two-out double was followed by an RBI double from Martinez. Martinez’s first Cape League hit and RBI extended Y-D’s lead to 3-0.
Reitz faced a threat in the top of the fourth as a leadoff single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. Head coach Scott Pickler turned to right-hander Bryan Peck (Westmont College), who allowed a two-run single to Dylan Carey (Nebraska) but maintained Y-D’s lead at 3-2 with a pair of strikeouts.
Y-D responded in the fourth as Cameron Kim (UCLA) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to drive in Drew Burress (Georgia Tech). Matt Bucciero (Fairfield) made a diving catch in shallow right field on the flyout and turned a double play as Y-D pushed its lead to 4-2.
Falmouth took the lead in the top of the sixth with three runs in the frame, including a two-run home run from Donovan LaSalle (Oklahoma State), who put the Commodores ahead 5-4. Peck exited with three runs allowed in 2 2/3 innings and four strikeouts.
Y-D replicated its four-run seventh inning in Tuesday’s win over Cotuit with five runs in the seventh. Cade McGee (Texas Tech) looped an RBI single into right-center field and Martinez laced his second RBI double of the game before Aloy’s three-run blast over the left field wall gave Y-D a 9-5 advantage.
Falmouth battled back with three runs in the top of the eighth as an RBI single from Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma), a run-scoring wild pitch and an RBI double from Luke Gaffney (Purdue) cut Y-D’s lead to 9-8. Carmichael recorded his second RBI with his second double of the game in the bottom of the eighth, which was enough run support for Trevor Moore (Stanford), who recorded his third save.
