On Monday, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox shutout the Cotuit Kettleers 5-0 to improve to a 13-1 record this season. Despite making two errors and other defensive mistakes, Y-D’s offense was aggressive and pitching was controlling enough to secure a win.

Pitching was a gift for Y-D this evening. Right-hander Hunter Watkins (Oklahoma State) started on the mound and allowed four hits, one walk, and forced four strikeouts over four innings.

The show continued when Y-D right-hander Peter Dubie (Brown University) replaced Watkins and stayed on the mound for the rest of the game, earning him the win. Over five innings, Dubie allowed no hits and only one walk with seven strikeouts, completely diminishing any hope of Cotuit igniting a spark in its offense.

On the offensive end, Y-D combined bunts and base hits to score the team’s five runs.

The small-ball front included a sacrifice bunt from Ethan Ball (Virginia Tech) in the fourth inning with runners at first and second. Then, in the sixth inning, John Beverley (Georgia State) executed a flawless bunt down the first base line with runners on first and third. This knocked in Ball, who was on third, to put Y-D ahead 3-0 and advanced Caleb Daniel (Georgia Tech) to second. Most impressively, because of his speed, Beverley narrowly beat the throw to first.

Beverley was proud of his bunt.

“It was so beautiful, like right down the line,” he said. “I was running all fast, all safe, and the run scored. I got a hit, and it was barbeque chicken from there.”

Daniel was another player with a successful night at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with one walk and one strikeout. One of his hits was an RBI single to left-field that put Y-D ahead 2-0. He felt like tonight’s performances helped him break out of his minor offensive slump, in which he’s made contact regularly but doesn’t record hits.

“I’ve been hitting a lot of line drives straight to people, so that’s kind of unfortunate,” Daniel said. “But I mean, it worked out today, so I won’t be too mad about it.”

He also noted that he was best at attacking Cotuit’s fastballs and changeups from the plate.

Daniel and bunt-master Beverley were also involved in a flyball standoff in left-center field, where neither player called the ball which gave Cotuit a hit. As the center fielder, Beverley took ownership of the missed ball. Although the incident happened early in the game, neither player let it affect his performance for the rest of the evening—a testament to this team’s ability to combine their talent and positive mindsets to outweigh any mental mistakes.

Y-D will get a chance to improve to 14-1 on Tuesday, at home, against the Chatham Anglers at 5:00 pm EDT.
