The second off-day of the 2026 Cape League calendar offers another reset from the everyday action. Wareham and Orleans, two talented rosters in search of finding consistency, now face off against one another after this rest day.
The Gatemen recently found their groove offensively after consecutive double-digit hit outings against the Mariners and Commodores. It turned into a win at Spillane Field against the Mariners with a walk-off victory, then the exact opposite happened the following night. Wareham went to extra innings for the first time this summer against Falmouth and fell after a wire-to-wire contest.
Tuesday night brings Wareham back home to cross-divisional action.
Starting Pitchers: Frey vs. Mohan
Orleans: Chase Frey (Grand Canyon) spun a dynamic first start of the summer, allowing just one earned run over five innings. Frey also threw five strikeouts, something he did 69 times this past spring en route to an All-Mountain West Second Team nod. He features a four-pitch mix: a fastball accompanied by a changeup, slider and curveball. But how will Frey fare against a red-hot Gatemen lineup?
Wareham: The bats have awakened with 18 runs in two games. Now, the Gatemen’s pitching and defense needs to answer the call in every inning. The slow starts make it hard on every positional group in what was otherwise a strong week of games. Connor Mohan (Texas Tech) can deliver that consistent start after a hefty 71-pitch outing earlier this season. He fared well against a star-studded Brewster lineup, and now makes his first home appearance of the summer.
Players To Watch
Firebirds: Dominic Cadiz (UCLA) is Orleans’ hit leader and is tied for third in the Cape League in base knocks with 10, and is slashing .323 on the summer. He is the Firebirds’ toughest out and can put the ball in play and spray it to all fields when needed. Cadiz helps create inning-long offense rallies that can break a ballgame wide open.
Gatemen: A large part of Wareham’s 10-run outing against Falmouth was Jason Wachs’ (LSU) 4-for-5 day at the plate. In addition to the base hits, Wachs tallied two RBIs and earned a free pass. He consistently hits in the top half of the Gatemen’s order and usually patrols center field: the recent Tiger commit has hit his stride.
Weather will play a factor throughout every CCBL matchup on the night, and that remains true at Spillane Field. First pitch is set for 6:00, but weather may alter the action with the expected rain.
