Friday night lights. A West Division matchup. A chance for the Gatemen’s first road win of the season.
The scene sets itself. Wareham couldn’t get much going in Thursday’s matchup against undefeated Yarmouth-Dennis, but a new day creates a new opportunity. The Gatemen have recently succeeded in their offensive progress, putting the ball in play more and using men on base to their advantage.
Wareham faces its first West Division foe since Sunday, trying to gain some ground back in the early standings. Hyannis also sits at 1-4 on the year and haven’t won a home matchup to this point. Both squads have yet to reach the 20-run mark and own a team ERA over 5.00. They have each shown flashes of brilliance through the first five contests of the season, but it hasn’t translated to the win column.
Starting Pitchers: Lambert vs. Sweum
Wareham: Garrett Lambert (Alabama) recently committed to the Crimson Tide in the transfer portal, and now he has an opportunity to truly grasp the reins as the Gatemen’s ace this summer. His CCBL debut was outstanding against the Kettleers: five scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. Lambert’s control and efficiency helps him work deep into games, and that should continue against one of the league’s lesser offenses to begin 2026. Wareham has struggled in early frames, but Lambert’s start accompanied with some run support should help secure an advantage,
Hyannis: The Harbor Hawks have allowed the second-most earned runs in the Cape League, but Karsten Sweum (Gonzaga) only allowed two over four innings in his first start of the summer. He kept a high-powered Whitecaps offense at bay before the matchup turned into a 9-7 shootout. Sweum didn’t walk any batters and produced quick innings with strikeouts and weak-contact grounders. Will Hyannis reverse its defensive struggles in start no. 2 for Sweum, or will Wareham’s bats blemish one of the Cape League’s top starters?
Players to Watch
Gatemen: Wareham needs men on base to execute offensively. Tony Lira (Arizona) has answered the call with five hits and two walks. He doubled and eventually scored against the Red Sox on Thursday and has been a reliable glove at first base with pick-offs and cross-field hops. Lira brings consistency to a lineup that is still searching for sustained production.
Harbor Hawks: Speaking of production at the plate, Jon Embury (Florida) leads the Cape League with seven hits and a .467 batting average. He tallied two base knocks in Hyannis’ first matchup against Wareham and has reached base in his last four games. Embury committed to the Gators after being named a finalist for the Buster Posey Award (Nation’s top catcher).
This is only Wareham’s second West Division game of the summer, but the points start to stack in June. The Gatemen finished just six points ahead of the West Division’s fourth place team in 2025, making every matchup crucial for the team’s current standing and in the chase for extended August baseball.
First pitch from Hyannis’ McKeon Park is set for 6:00 p.m. Fans can attend for free or tune in on Cape League TV and Wareham’s official YouTube page.
