After the Gatemen made the trip over the bridge for Friday’s West Division matchup against Hyannis, they now return home and return to cross-division play.
The Mariners are the Cape League’s hottest team. They lead the CCBL with 44 runs, 49 hits, and 34 RBIs. Harwich is on a five-game win streak, and is riding into Spillane Field with momentum after a walk-off victory against Orleans Friday.
Wareham has strengthened its numbers at the plate with names such as Foster Apple (Transfer Portal) and Drew Rogers (Georgia Tech) beginning to find their strides, but it hasn’t translated to the win column just yet. The Gatemen tallied seven hits in Friday’s matchup against the Harbor Hawks, but were only able to muster a single run.
Starting Pitchers: Williford vs. Walton
Harwich: Trey Williford (UNC Wilmington) has been a strikeout machine through two starts. He has notched 13 K’s to just three walks on the summer and has forced hitters into tough positions with strong overall command. Williford was named 2026 Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, First Team All-CAA selection and CAA All-Rookie team member after 81 strikeouts this past spring.
Wareham: Wade Walton (High Point) makes his second start of the summer. He only allowed three earned runs last Sunday against Hyannis and worked his way out of multiple jams by forcing weak grounders. Walton threw 74 pitches and could be in line for another hefty outing after the Gatemen used three arms in Friday’s matchup with the Harbor Hawks. The Mariners are a red-hot offense, can Walton cool them down?
Players To Watch
Mariners: Quinton Coats (Cincinnati) has recently surged. He tallied two hits on Friday and now has four runs and six total bases on the summer. The power hasn’t arrived to Cape Cod just yet, but Coats’ 28 home runs with the Bearcats should make pitchers think twice about tossing a challenge pitch.
Gatemen: Kade Elam (Louisville) just played shortstop for Wareham after sitting on the hot corners the previous nights. He is showing off positional flexibility, and will be able to display dominance once his bat fully breaks out. That offensive prowess should come soon after 63 hits in the ACC this past spring.
Wareham hosts Harwich on First Responders Night, one of its biggest promotional events of the year. The Gatemen will honor men and women who provide fast-action assistance to the local community, treating them to pregame meals and an incredible night at Spillane Field. First Responders Night is often one of the best-attended games of the year, and it only adds to the action on a Saturday night against a team on a five-game win streak.
First Pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. Gatemen fans can attend the matchup free of charge, or can catch the call by visiting Cape League TV or Wareham’s official YouTube page.
