The Gatemen’s gauntlet ended on Friday.
After a grueling stretch, Wareham (and the rest of the Cape League) was rewarded with consecutive off-days with the All-Star Game in Harwich, a contest that would be officially cancelled due to rain.
The Gatemen and the Mariners both fell into the break on a loss, Wareham losing to West Division-leading Bourne and Harwich to league-leading Yarmouth-Dennis, but the weekend break brings the second half of the CCBL season and a fresh start.
Wareham sits four points behind Cotuit for the final playoff spot in the West Division: while the game is an East vs. West matchup, every game counts for even more down the final stretch of the summer.
Starting Pitchers: Flores vs. Barfield
Harwich: After being the Mariners’ final arm in their 9-3 takedown of the CCBL-leading Red Sox last Sunday, Jason Flores (Georgia) makes his first start of the summer. He recently committed to the Bulldogs after two years with the Longhorns, and will look to show off his fastball that can reach triple digits to the UGA coaching staff. Harwich gave up six runs in its last game before the break, now it looks to use Flores’ arm to get the defense back on track.
Wareham: He technically started in the Gatemen’s continuation game against the Commodores seven days ago, but this is Jaden Barfield’s (Oklahoma) first official start of 2026. He is one of two Wareham arms with multiple wins on the summer (and an undefeated record at that), and has tossed 19 strikeouts over just 12 innings. He comes in with serious momentum: Barfield has only allowed one earned run and five hits over his last two outings.
Players To Watch
Mariners: Despite being shutout before the break, Cade Kurland (LSU) made sure to get his base knock and extended his hit streak to seven games. He became the fourth Harwich batter to reach the 20-hit mark, and holds the team’s third-highest batting average. The Mariners have the most hits (232) in the entire CCBL, and Larson’s bat plays a role in holding that title.
Gatemen: Wareham’s only multi-hit batter in its loss at Bourne before the break, Levi Clark (Tennessee) can head on another hit streak after his six-game stretch at the end of June into the start of July. He was one of the Gatemen’s four players that briefly took Whitehouse Field on Saturday, but now Clark looks to use his star status to put Wareham into a playoff spot in the last few weeks of the regular season.
