Wareham has five games over the next three days: a home doubleheader on Friday, a trip to Falmouth on Saturday, and two more games on Sunday to close out the Cape League regular season.
The Gatemen face all four West Division teams over this final stretch in their chase to qualify for the CCBL postseason. After two consecutive days off, the entire CCBL now has a sprint to the finish line with seeding and matchups on the line. Can Wareham capitalize on the chaos and improve its shot at a playoff bid?
Cotuit, 1 pm:
The Gatemen and Kettleers face off for the fifth and final time of 2026 with playoff implications on the line: Cotuit is the fourth place team in the West Division and Wareham sits fifth. The Kettleers have lost seven of their last eight games, the lone victory coming at home against the Gatemen, but still sit two points and two games ahead thanks to their victory in the season series.
When Cotuit won a razor-tight 5-4 ballgame at Lowell Park on July 24, it clinched a three games to one season record and the deciding victory in the tiebreaker. Wareham fought back and got the tying run to first base, but couldn't pull through on the road. The Gatemen can tie the Kettleers in points with a victory today and then would be just a single game back from the fourth and final playoff spot in the West.
Wareham’s Sahil Patel (Ohio State) takes the mound for his third start of the summer. In his last opener, a home start against the Whitecaps, he tallied a season-high six strikeouts and his K total is at 11 on the season. Patel is one of the top arms left in the Gatemen’s staff looking to provide a boost in this crucial matchup.
Cotuit’s projected starter is Tyler Brashear (Eckerd) making his first start against Wareham but second appearance after earning the save in their matchup at Lowell Park on Cape Cod Baseball League Opening Day. He has 27 strikeouts on the summer, and only allowed one hit over four innings of work in his most recent start last weekend.
Bourne, 7 pm:
After facing the Kettleers, the Gatemen have a quick turnaround against the Braves just hours later. While Wareham is 1-3 against Bourne on the summer, its lone win came at Spillane Field on July 3rd: the start of a back-to-back series against the Bravos.
While Wareham is its own chase for the playoffs, Bourne is trying to clinch the top seed in the West Division: it sits at 39 points, just three above Hyannis. While both squads will qualify, the top seed faces the final squad to get into the playoffs (Wareham/Cotuit), whereas the second seed has a tougher first round draw.
Pitching matchups are not final for the Gatemen’s final matchup with the Braves due to the rainouts.
One final stretch: it begins with a critical homestand.
