After Tyler Myatt’s (Tennessee) grand slam on Saturday, he wasn’t done just yet in Tuesday’s matchup against the No. 1-ranked CCBL East team — Harwich. Snapping the Mariners’ six-game winning streak, the Birds narrowly took the game, 2-1.
Serving as the leadoff hitter, Myatt made his presence quite known within the game, clobbering a homer over the fence of Whitehouse Field.
“I’m kind of like the underdog out here,” Myatt said. “I went undrafted this year. A lot of the scouts said they didn’t see enough. I wanted to come up here and compete against the best. Hopefully, I’m doing good to show them what’s up.”
Fortunately, for Myatt, his recent performance has propelled the Birds’ offense.
In Orleans’ four matchups against the Mariners this season, the Birds had taken three of those games. That only grew on Tuesday night when the Birds narrowly took the matchup.
It was down to the wire who was going to come out victorious. And it was nothing short of a punch-for-punch battle.
The Birds’ success was credited to both its offensive and defensive efforts. In the early innings of the game, Orleans’ pitching staff took center stage.
Starting on the mound for the Birds was Ryan Oshinskie (Brown). Holding the Mariners to a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, Oshinskie started out explosive for Orleans — delivering when it mattered most for his team.
“Really great opportunity to get to go out and get the start,” Oshinskie said. “The first one in a while, so it was really just a pleasure to go out there and have a pitching staff and a coaching staff that trust me with the baseball.”
However, the Mariners took notes, as Gianni Gambardella (Maine) did not let off the gas pedal. With a successful pitchers’ duel, Gambardella went inning for inning with Oshinskie.
In his five innings pitched, Gambardella allowed zero runs off four hits with three strikeouts.
The box score told a more perfected version for Oshinskie, who notched eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits in his 4 2/3 innings pitched. Logging an ERA of 2.05, Oshinskie described his performance against the Mariners.

“What was working tonight, I was just trying to go after hitters early and throw a lot of off-speed pitches,” Oshinskie said. “I mean, that’s kind of my forte, I have a really good changeup, so just pouring that in the zone, with two strikes, just getting it below.”
Oshinskie said he wasn’t alone, though.
“My defense was working really hard behind me, too,” Oshinskie said. “I love Cash Dugger behind the plate, too.”
D.C. Brown (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) followed Oshinskie’s lead when he took the mound in the bottom of the fifth.
Everything clicked for Brown in his 1 2/3 innings pitched, posting three strikeouts.
That resembled a similar story for both Brady Fox (Maryland-Baltimore County) and Steele Murdock (UC San Diego), who pieced everything together for the Birds’ defense against the Mariners.
It wasn’t until the eighth inning, when all eyes were finally on both squads' offenses.
With all three of the game’s runs coming in the eighth, that’s when everything changed for the Birds.
The third time was the charm for Myatt. Notching his third home run of the summer after his debut 471-foot home run against Wareham and his grand slam against Y-D, Myatt did just the same against the Mariners.
“It was cool, especially coming off a bad game for me on Sunday,” Myatt said about his home run. “I spent the day off in the gym and just hitting a little bit. Coming out here and getting down 0-2, and then luckily hanging a slider.”
The Birds’ other run on the night came off a Dawson Bryce (Charlotte) line-drive single that brought Elijah Ickes (Hawaii) home.
But in the bottom of the seventh, with players on first and second, it seemed like the Mariners had a chance of a comeback — thanks to Matt Conte (Wake Forest). Lining a single to left field, Conte scored Patrick Fultz (Wright State) on the play.
Clocking 98 mph with his fastball, Murdock did not let up too easily.
In the bottom of the ninth, while Kyle Wolff (Boston College) flew the ball to right field, it was caught just a few feet before the fence from Anthony Potestio (UC San Diego), as the Birds took the matchup, 2-1.
Coming off the win, Oshinskie described what it meant for the team.
“Great vibes,” Oshinskie said. “We’ve been really good against Harwich this year, and I’m glad we continued that momentum into today. Really big win for the fellas, and get us hot and going for the playoffs.”
