The Birds were an out away from getting shutout and sent back to the bottom of the East Division standings on Thursday night, but instead showed the league exactly what kind of team they are.
After seeing his team's win probability drop to a mere 0.4%, Mike Mancini (Vanderbilt) proved that numbers are, well, just numbers, and sparked an unprecedented rally with his fourth triple of the summer.
Mancini's triple was the first of five consecutive two-out hits the Birds recorded in their improbable ninth-inning comeback, a moment that perfectly captured the resilience carried by the 2024 Firebirds.
"That ninth inning shows exactly what kind of team we are," said Mancini.
"This team's been able to maneuver every obstacle and continues to find ways to win the games that matter."
Luckily for the Firebirds, who time and time again have played their best ball when the lights are brightest, the spotlight isn't appearing to dim anytime soon, with their last four games playing a key part in their playoff seeding.
Bennett Markinson (Northwestern), who brought the Birds down to their final strike before driving the eventual game-winning two-run single into right, credits his team's unwavering resilience to their desire to continue playing ball.
"We would give anything to keep playing down here, and we're just trying to keep that in the back of our minds and enjoy the moment. It's a special group of guys in that clubhouse," said Markinson.
"That ninth was a testament to how much the Birdies want it."
The Birds will continue their late-season climb up the standings when the Mariners come to Eldredge for a battle for the East Division's third seed.
