The Hyannis Harbor Hawks traveled to Harwich to face the Mariners at Whitehouse Field Friday night. It was first responders night at Whitehouse where eight units of first responders were in attendance.
The Mariners came into the game losing their last two games to Brewster and Cotuit.
Jackson Peavy got the start for the Mariners Friday night. Peavy came into the game working off of a great start against the Brewster Whitecaps last Friday. Peavy pitched 4 ⅔ innings, only allowing three Whitecaps reach base as well as striking out three.
The Mariners struck first in the bottom of the first inning after Sean O’Leary singled to left field to score Ty Smolinski.
The Harbor Hawks would even the game after a sacrifice fly ball to center field with the bases loaded.
Peavy lasted until the top of the fifth inning until the Harbor Hawks drew two walks and a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. After allowing a free run because of a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, Peavy’s night was over.
Bryan Matuschat entered with the bases loaded and one out and after three pitches, Hyannis’ offense was off the field and on their way back to defense.
Peavy allowed two runs over 4 ⅓ innings while giving up three hits, walking three and striking out four.
The Harbor Hawks added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning after a Jordan Lodise RBI single and a Matt Ineich sacrifice fly ball to make the lead 4-1.
Harwich has struggled heavily this week with their late game offense, Friday night was a different story.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with the Mariners down 4-1, Harwich opened the inning with back-to-back singles from Nate Castellon and Jackson Hotchkiss. After back to back strikeouts, Colin Larson stepped to the plate.
Starting the game 0-3, Larson turned on a high fastball, lifting it to deep right field. The ball barely stayed in the yard and Castellon and Hotchkiss were able to score. The Mariners would go into the eighth inning only trailing 4-3.
The Mariners only had one player reach base in the last two innings and weren't able to pull off the comeback. Coach Englert wants his team to know a win won't come from one at-bat, the team needs to be patient with the process.
"I think sometimes we're trying to do too much at the plate. We have to have a better plan. It's not about hitting doubles all the time. I think we're trying to do too much with guys in scoring position instead of just moving the runner. We'll be OK. I'm not worried about it," said Coach Englert.
