When a guy throws a gem from the mound, sometimes you have to tip your cap.
The Harwich Mariners simply had no answer for Brewster Whitecaps starter Trevor Hansen. Hansen tossed six scoreless innings as the Whitecaps handed the Mariners their first shutout loss of the season, 5-0.
Hansen kept the Mariners off the basepaths. He allowed just three walks and struck out seven batters. The righty from UC Irvine pounded the zone with his breaking ball and changeup, preventing the Mariners from timing him up.
Even when the Mariners got hits, they were quickly erased.
Tre Broussard reached base twice, a walk and a single, and both times made an inning-ending out on the bases.
After an infield single in the third, Broussard was picked off at first base. In the sixth, Broussard attempted to go first to third on a single to left field from Aidan Robbins. Brewster left fielder Adam Magpoc made a charge on the ball and had plenty of time to get Broussard at third.
Harwich struck out 13 times in the game. It is the 11th time the team has struck out 10 or more times in a single game.
Even after Hansen left the game, the Mariners were up against a wall.
Maverick Rizy pitched the final two innings of the game and was virtually unhittable, striking out five of the six batters he faced. The 6-foot-9 righty’s fastball touched 95 mph, a big change from Hansen’s breaking-ball heavy arsenal.
“That starter had a great mix,” pitching coach Ryan Parker said. “And the guy they had at the end ... any time a guy is throwing 95-plus it is going to be a challenge. But that’s what we talked to our hitters about. They have to meet the challenge.”
Twist makes progress
With every start, starting pitcher Toby Twist takes another step in recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The lefty from Oregon went four innings for the first time since March 2024. After opening with two scoreless innings, he ran into trouble in the third.
Magpoc and Brendan Lawson opened the inning with a single and double to put two men into scoring position with no outs. A wild pitch from Twist allowed Brewster to take the first lead of the game. A Cal Fisher sacrifice fly made the score 2-0.
Twist finished his outing with a strong fourth inning, striking out his last two hitters to complete a scoreless inning. He finished with four punchouts.
“He’s been working really hard to bounce all the way back this summer. Putting in the work, he had something to show for it in the end,” Parker said.
Twist now has a 3.86 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings of work.
Moving forward
The Mariners will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they return home Sunday to face the Bourne Braves. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m. Troy Dressler will make his third start of the summer. He has a 3.86 ERA.
