HARWICH, Mass. -- The Harwich Mariners couldn’t sustain the momentum from their blowout win over Chatham on Tuesday night, falling 7-5 to Bourne in a tightly contested game. Harwich delivered a strong performance on offense, but the defense and pitching couldn’t keep the Bourne bats at bay long enough for the Mariners to pick up the victory.
Bourne posted a four run eighth inning to overtake Harwich heading into the ninth. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer delivered a two-run RBI to make the score 6-5 and would stand as the game winning hit.
Harwich was unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
The Mariners have finished their season series with Bourne with a losing record of 1-3
Kevin Karstetter (Arizona State) had a phenomenal night at the plate, going 4-5 with two RBI. Karstetter struck what looked like it would be the deciding hit in the bottom of the seventh when he broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single to drive in Talmadge LeCroy (South Carolina) and Andrew Yu (Duke).
The Mariner lineup was bolstered by newcomers Elijah Lambros (Maryland) and Kevin Keister (Maryland), who were a combined 5-7. Harwich will need Lambros and Keister to stay hot at the plate to make a playoff push in the coming weeks.
Speaking of staying hot, Ethan Anderson (Virginia) remained the hottest bat in the Harwich lineup. After a four RBI night against Chatham, Anderson drove in two more runs Tuesday night.
Sean Hard (Boston College) made his first start of the season for the Mariners on Tuesday night against the Braves. Hard, who has primarily been used in long relief situations, pitched a solid four innings, only allowing two runs against a potent Bourne lineup.
The Mariners will make the trip across the bridge to take on Wareham for the final time this season tomorrow night. First pitch at Spillane Field is slated for 6 p.m.
