The Harwich Mariners hosted Y-D on Tuesday afternoon for their fifth game playing against each other within the season. YD and Harwich have been neck and neck all season. With a full house at Whitehouse Field, there was a hope for a comeback. The Mariners have lost four of their five games against YD, but today the Mariners bounced back, winning the game.
Jason Flores was the starting pitcher for the Mariners. He pitched the first five innings on this Tuesday afternoon. Flores struck out eight, with only letting two players walk after five innings.
YD struck first and opened the score 2-0 with a two-run home run. The Mariners got their heads in the game; Sean O’Leary hit a two-run triple, allowing two runners to come home, bringing Harwich in the lead.
In the bottom of the second, Tucker Stockman began with a double before Niko Brini drew a walk, and Tyler Smolinski hit a single, which loaded the bases. Cade Kurland ripped a double to left field, clearing the bases; Harwich led 6-2.
Harwich kept up their winning streak in the bottom of the fourth inning. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe began the inning by leading off with a line drive that went straight through the center, right before he stole second. Brini was next up at bat, and he drove a hit to the right, bringing Kiracofe home. Smolinski then made a sacrifice fly, which brought Niko home.
The Mariners' defence has excelled through the sixth inning. Colin Larson threw the ball towards the catcher, Stockman, tagging Ryder Robinson, who was at the plate, following the YDs' single, preserving the scoreboard.
The Mariners have ended on a good note; speaking with Brini, he followed up with the same enthusiasm that the Mariners will carry with them for their next game at Bourne.
“We had a little bit of everything. We were hitting the ball hard. Not only that, but taking good at-bats, walking, getting on base, stealing bases, and the bats came when they needed to, so you just want to put it all together, and then off of that, all the pitching tonight just shut them down.”
What’s next
Harwich is traveling to Bourne to even the score tomorrow at 6 PM, hoping to avenge their previous loss.
First pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
