Vidourek, strong pitching fuel Braves' 6-2 win

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Nobody in the Bourne Braves’ dugout was content with their 6-6 tie against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Thursday.

Avoiding a loss to the Cape Cod Baseball League’s best team and putting up six runs in the process represented a considerable step in the right direction after losing three straight games. Even so, missing out on a monumental win left the Braves unsatisfied.

Bourne’s determination carried over into Friday’s matchup at the Falmouth Commodores.

Outfielder Landyn Vidourek (Cincinnati) took full advantage of a two-out, bases-loaded situation in the second inning, unloading on a 1-2 fastball above the heart of the plate and sending a towering grand slam over the right field wall. Vidourek’s blast set the table for a dominant effort, resulting in the Braves’ 6-2 victory over Falmouth.

“[The umpire] called a high strike the first time, [I] knew I had to fight off a couple high fastballs,” Vidourek said. “I finally got one I could put the barrel to and stay through it, and I just got the job done.”

There was something to be said about Bourne’s offensive performance. While the Braves (2-3-1) only logged seven hits on the night, they only struck out six times, the fewest they’ve been punched out this season.

“[The offensive approach] is getting better and better,” field manager Scott Landers said. “It’s going to keep getting better as they get more at-bats and get more comfortable. But I was proud of the at-bats that they put together today. We did some good things, we still need to clean up some stuff. But overall, it was a good day.”

Keeping the Commodores’ (1-5) offense at bay has been no easy task of late, as it had plated 21 runs in its past two contests. But that’s exactly what left-hander Zane Adams (Alabama) did. The rising sophomore used his fastball, which topped out at 92 mph, to find success and allowed only one earned run while dishing out five strikeouts.

Adams’ lone blemish came in the fifth, two innings after Bourne extended its lead to 5-0 via an RBI groundout from infielder Marek Houston (Wake Forest), when infielder Jayson Jones (Arkansas) singled and was later sent across on a single to center field from outfielder Tab Tracy (Texas A&M).

“He pitched off his fastball,” Landers said. “He got ahead, put hitters away. He started using the changeup and breaking ball more and more as he went on. He was pretty efficient and did a great job.”

Adams passed the torch to right-hander Brayden Risedorph (Indiana), who had already shown flashes of dominance on the mound in a 1 2/3-frame, four-strikeout outing Monday in Chatham, after the fifth. Risedorph looked just as comfortable Friday as he did four days prior, allowing only two base runners — a hit and walk — in three innings of work.

By the time right-handed pitcher Griffin Hugus (Miami) entered to close out the ninth, Bourne’s advantage was extended to 6-1. Infielder Nick Roselli (Binghamton) drew a two-out walk before being driven in courtesy of Houston’s second RBI base hit of the evening.

Hugus ensured the Braves’ five-run lead stayed intact, albeit with a bit of trouble. Two singles from catcher Henry Cooke (Virginia Tech) and Jayson Jones (Arkansas) along with a walk drawn by Isaiah Barkett (Stetson) loaded the bases, and Tracy cashed in with a one-run single.

But that was all the Commodores could muster, as Hugus induced the game-sealing groundout to cap a strong day from the Bourne bullpen.

“It’s tremendous,” Vidourek said of his pitching staff’s impact on the game. “It helps the offense get going, gives us time a little bit. Today we started early, but there are those games where you don’t start early and [strong pitching] helps tremendously.”

Pivotal sequence

On Friday, Adams didn’t skip a beat during his start, needing virtually no time to settle in on the bump.

After working a 1-2 count during the game's first at-bat, Adams caught infielder Jaxon Willits (Oklahoma) swinging on a pitch high in the zone. The Texas native then induced a groundout in two pitches before picking up his second punchout of the night — also swinging — against designated hitter Luke Gaffney (Purdue).

Adams’ 1-2-3 first inning foreshadowed how the rest of the game would unfold for Bourne on the mound. The Braves struck out a combined eight batters and issued only two walks, the latter coming a night after they walked only one Hyannis hitter. While Bourne’s pitching was shaky at times during its losing streak, it appears to have turned a corner over its past two contests.

Hitter of the Game: Marek Houston

The Braves’ most consistent hitter so far this season has undoubtedly been Houston, who added two more hits to his season total Friday night in addition to two RBI.

Houston drove in his first run in the top of the third inning, knocking a groundout to Willits at shortstop that allowed Roselli to score from third. Fast-forward to the top of the ninth, and with Roselli on base again — this time at first — Houston knocked a double into right field to provide the Braves with insurance.

The Wake Forest product also recorded a walk in the win and extended his hitting streak to five games.

A look ahead

Bourne has won its first contest since opening night and is the fourth-best team in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s West Division. On Saturday, the Bravos will return to Doran Park to host the Wareham Gatemen, the second-ranked squad in the West with a 4-2 record after defeating the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

With a loss Friday, Falmouth is 1-5 this season and will visit the Chatham Anglers on Saturday. Chatham is 3-3 on the summer, suffering a 7-4 defeat to the Brewster Whitecaps on Friday.

Saturday’s probable starter for the Braves is left-hander Connor Wietgrefe (Minnesota). Wietgrefe got the nod for Bourne on opening night and didn’t disappoint, tossing five scoreless frames of three-hit ball along with six strikeouts. He will likely be pitted against righty Cole Leaman (Lehigh), who shut down the Commodores on Sunday, accruing five strikeouts and allowing two base runners in a five-inning start.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
