BOURNE, Mass. — After struggling to find big innings offensively throughout the season, the Braves put up five in the sixth inning Friday against Wareham. On Saturday, the big inning struck again.
This time it was early for Bourne, as the bats erupted in the bottom of the second, pouring on six runs by the time the frame concluded.
The fast start was what the Braves needed, as they extended their win streak to four over the hottest team in the Cape Cod Baseball League with a 10-1 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
"We're playing well in all aspects," field manager Scott Landers said.
Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt) started the rally in the second with a double, then the bases were loaded following Jon LeGrande (St. John’s) getting hit by a pitch and Campbell Smithwick (Oklahoma State) reaching on a throwing error by pitcher Dylan Tate (Oklahoma).
The scoring spree started with a two-run double by Nick Groves (Illinois). Two more scored following a two-run single by Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt). Logan Hughes (Texas Tech) then ripped an RBI single, and after Kuhio Aloy (Arkansas) got hit by a pitch, Kade Lewis (Wake Forest) pushed the lead to 6-0 with an RBI single.
It was a standout performance from Matthew Shorey (Vanderbilt) in the starting pitching role for Bourne. He tossed five shutout innings with three strikeouts and gave up just one hit.
"If you go back out and shut it down, then you retain all that momentum," Landers said. "If you throw strikes and get out play good defense, it's hard to come back from those big innings."

The Braves tacked on another score in the fifth, starting with a double from Smithwick. He advanced to third on a groundout from Groves, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Waite, increasing the lead to 7-0.
In the sixth, Y-D erased the goose egg from its run total. Jayce Tharnish (St. Bonaventure) singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch from Logan Beavis (Texas Tech). He scored shortly after from an RBI single by Jake Bold (Princeton) to make the score 7-1.
Bourne added two more in the eighth, as Aloy singled and then scored on a double from Lewis. Lewis then scored seconds later on a one-base knock from Holcomb. A hit-by-pitch and two walks later had Holcomb scoring to take the 10-1 advantage.
Dominic Mauro (Cincinnati) closed it out for the Braves, making the 10-1 victory over Y-D their fourth win in a row.
"We've been pitching pretty well, limiting the walks, getting more strikeouts, and then we're playing good defense and getting more timely hitting and putting up some crooked numbers offensively," Landers said.
Bourne Braves Player of the Game
Waite continues to be a force at the top of the lineup and shortstop. He went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run and made a leaping grab in the field to rob a base hit.
Key moment
The big innings continued to benefit the Braves, as the six runs in the second were the difference in the victory.
