College Catch-Up: How Braves players have done in February

The NCAA college baseball season is upon us, and, for fans of the Cape Cod Baseball League, that means summer baseball is almost here.

The back-to-back reigning champion Bourne Braves currently has 42 players on its anticipated Opening Day roster.

Through February the Braves roster features 16 players on teams represented in the USA TODAY Sports Baseball Coaches Poll.

Here is a check-in on how some of this season’s Braves are faring in the month of February:

Infielder Marek Houston (Wake Forest) has had a standout start to the 2024 season, hitting .323, and slugging .452, with four doubles, eight walks, and nine runs scored. His bat is one of the reasons the Demon Deacons are off to a 7-1 start.

Virginia Tech’s Garrett Michel has also started the season strong, hitting .406 and slugging .902. In eight games for the Hokies, Michel has belted four home runs and added four doubles while driving in 12. As of March 1, he’s hit a home run in three straight games, where he’s gone 8-for-11 during the stretch.

Michel’s teammate, sophomore righty Griffin Stieg tossed five shutout innings while striking out seven against Rhode Island. Wyatt Parliament has pieced together two quality outings to begin his year for VT, allowing three earned runs and striking out 10 in 8.2 innings.

Will McCausland (St. Joseph’s) struck out 10, walked one, and allowed three hits across six innings in a no-decision against Gardner-Webb. Through 11 innings on the year, the right-hander has struck out 18.

Infielder Kodey Shojinaga (Kansas) is hitting .323 with 1.077 OPS after hitting three home runs and four doubles in seven games. He’s struck out only four times in 31 at-bats and has four walks.

Outfielder Gage Harrelson (Texas Tech) has hit .333 in seven games with 10 runs scored and five RBI with nine walks.

Coastal Carolina’s Cameron Flukey has appeared in three games and posted 2.57 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks allowed. At the plate, catcher/infielder Caden Bodine has hit .417 with a 1.188 OPS, one homer, nine RBI, seven walks, and one strikeout in seven games for the Chanticleers.

Outfielder Curtis Stanfield (Auburn) has hit .308 and slugged .615 through eight games with three doubles, one triple, and one homer.
