Y-D and Bourne combined to use nine different pitchers in Sunday’s game, which Y-D lost by a final score of 2-1.
Pitching was the focus on Sunday night, as both teams were held to just three total runs. Y-D and Bourne had already secured their playoff spots, meaning the matchup had no effect on the standings. As a result, several pitchers were used to keep arms fresh for the upcoming postseason.
Clay Hendry opened the game for Y-D, striking out two in his one inning of work. Chris Downs gave up a single run in the second inning but escaped the frame before Bourne could inflict any more damage. The lone run came on an RBI single by Ryan Cooney (Oregon).
Josh Landry continued his strong summer, tossing four innings of one-run baseball. Gavin Kelly (West Virginia) drove in his 16th run of the season with an RBI single, giving Bourne a 2-0 lead. Landry allowed just two hits in his four innings of work. Jack Nobe closed out the game for Y-D with two scoreless innings.
Quinn Hold (Keystone) started the game for Bourne with three scoreless innings, followed by Colton Hartman (Louisville) and Saxon Roberts (Auburn), who each tossed two shutout frames. Tim Lawson (North Carolina) allowed an unearned run, and Landon White (Bryant) earned the save in the top of the ninth.
The Y-D offense hadn’t been shut out all year, but Bourne’s pitching threatened to end that streak in the final game of the regular season. Jayce Tharnish took matters into his own hands, scoring on a Chris Hacopain groundout in the eighth inning to give Y-D its first and only run of the game. Y-D collected just four hits on the night in a quiet offensive showing from both teams.
The Y-D Red Sox will face the Orleans Firebirds in Round 1 of the 2025 CCBL playoffs, with Game 1 set for Tuesday evening at Eldredge Park.
