The Gatemen did not exit the first quarter of the season as they had hoped. They held a five-run lead against the Firebirds on Wednesday, only to give up seven unanswered runs in a 7-5 loss.
The Gatemen, who now sit at 4-6, head to Brewster to face the Whitecaps for the first time this season. Wareham split their regular season series with the Whitecaps in 2024, going 2-2 against them.
The Whitecaps, after a historic 6-0 start to their season, have lost three of their last four games and now sit at 7-3. They broke a three-game losing streak on Wednesday, defeating Hyannis 6-1, getting 13 hits in the game.
If the Whitecaps play like they did against the Harbor Hawks, the Gatemen will have their hands full, but the team feels a little extra motivation to win because of Field Manager Ryan Smyth’s connection to the team.
Smyth coached in Brewster for six years as an assistant coach under Brewster Manager Jamie Shevchik, with whom he works at Keystone College. There are also several coaches between both teams who work at Keystone, making a potential win that much sweeter for the Gatemen.
Starting Pitchers
The Gatemen go back to the top of their starting rotation tonight, bringing right-hander Daniel Powell (Kennesaw State) on the mound for his third start this season. Powell’s last start against the Harbor Hawks on June 20 did not go as he would have hoped. In 3.1 innings, he allowed 6 hits, 5 earned runs, 2 walks, and a home run, while striking out two batters.
However, he was given run support by his offense and was bailed out by the Gatemen bullpen en route to the Gatemen winning 12-6. Look for him to come out firing, aiming to go longer and to avenge his previous performance.
The Whitecaps will be starting pitcher Billy Barlow (Florida). The right-hander pitched in one start so far this summer against the Falmouth Commodores on June 19.
In that game, he threw for 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, and a walk while striking out a batter. He currently holds a 3.60 ERA, and he will look to keep the Whitecaps’ momentum going.
Players to Watch
For the Gatemen, Ty Dalley (Clemson), Levi Clark (Tennessee), and Kyuss Gargett (Kentucky) have been star hitters for the Gatemen this season. Each of them is batting over .300, and each of them has been hot as of late, all getting a hit against Orleans on Wednesday.
Dalley and Clark were also recently selected to represent the Gatemen in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s scrimmage against the MLB Draft League at Citi Field on June 30, 2025. Look for them to continue to make an impact at the plate tonight.
The Whitecaps have Player of the Week Josiah Ragsdale (Boston College) on their roster. Ragsdale, in the first six games of the season, slashed a .474 batting average, grabbed 9 hits, 9 RBIs, and stole 8 bases, cementing himself as one of the Whitecaps’ best players right now.
Another name to look for is Blake Cyr (Florida), who is batting .345 this summer. He went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs against Hyannis on Wednesday. He has constantly been a threat to teams and sits at the heart of Brewster’s order.
Both Ragsdale and Cyr will also represent the Cape Cod Baseball League in their scrimmage against the MLB Draft League, so look out for them tonight.
First pitch for tonight’s game will be at 5:00 p.m. at Stony Brook Field. You can visit the park and watch the game for free, or you can tune into the Gatemen’s radio broadcast with Cory Miller, Josh Richardson, and Rayna Maggelet on the call by clicking HERE.
