Everything that could go wrong for the Gatemen went wrong in Saturday’s game against Falmouth. What started as a tight 4-4 battle quickly spiraled out of control. The Gatemen conceded 11 runs on 15 hits against the Commodores, but the most glaring detail was the errors.

The Gatemen defense committed seven errors on Saturday, the third most by a team in a single game in Cape Cod Baseball League history. A series of missed ground balls, overthrows, and dropped fly balls was the main cause of the Gatemen’s defeat.

It summed up the recent stretch of games for the Gatemen as they now find themselves in a five-game losing skid, the longest of the season thus far. With a day off on Monday, the Gatemen hope to end the first week of July on a positive note with a win against the Cotuit Kettleers.

Cotuit started out the season rocky, going 2-7-1, but since then have gone 5-3, winning 4 of their last 5 games. On Saturday, the Ketts routed the Whitecaps 19-3, scoring 14 runs in the sixth inning alone.

That is a much different story than when the Gatemen first played them on June 15. That game ended in a 1-0 walk-off win for Cotuit after the first nine innings went scoreless. The Gatemen hope that this time they can even up the series and get back on the right track.

Starting Pitchers

The Gatemen give the start to the southpaw Cooper Consiglio (NC State). Consiglio has made three starts for the Gatemen this summer. He pitched 11 innings, allowed 8 hits, 7 runs (5 earned), 4 walks, and struck out 10 batters.

He holds a 0-1 record with a 4.09 ERA. His last start against the Firebirds on June 29 was solid. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and struck out 3 batters. The Gatemen will need a good start from him tonight to set the tone.

The Ketts, on the other hand, will throw right-hander James Hays (Stetson). Hays has also started three games for Cotuit. He pitched 11.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, 8 runs (3 earned), 2 walks, and struck out 14 batters.

On July 1, Mays had a fantastic start against the Y-D Red Sox, where he pitched 5 innings scoreless and struck out 6 batters en route to getting the win. With momentum on his side, he could be tough for the Gatemen’s lineup to crack.

Players to Watch

Hunter Carns (Florida State) had the best night for the Gatemen on Saturday. He went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs, getting a 2-run home run and a 2-run double. Levi Clark (Tennessee) has also been great for the Gatemen this summer. He is batting .308 this season and had a hit on Saturday. Look for both of them to make an impact in the lineup tonight.

One name to always look out for on the Kettleers is Jarren Advincula (California). The 2024 Cape League All-Star has been a solid leadoff man, batting .333 on the season. He went 3 for 4 with a walk, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored in Saturday’s 19-3 win over Brewster.

Caden Bogenpohl (Missouri State) also had a great night on Saturday, going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Look for both of them to make a big impact for Cotuit tonight.

First pitch for tonight’s game will be at 6:00 p.m. at Spillane Field in Wareham. You can attend the game for free, or you can tune into the Gatemen’s broadcast with Cory Miller, Josh Richardson, and Rayna Maggelet on the call by clicking HERE.
