Everyone aims to end a chapter of their life on a positive note, and the Wareham Gatemen (6-7) did just that to close out the month of June. After a tough loss to the Y-D Red Sox on Saturday, the Gatemen bounced back with a 6-4 win over Orleans on Sunday.
Their trip to Eldredge Park was a great success, both on the mound and at the plate, with many players making their season debut as well. It was a perfect way to end the month of June, heading into a day off on Monday.
Now the Gatemen return to regular-season play and start a six-game stretch with a visit to Veterans Field to face the Chatham Anglers (4-6-3).
The Anglers are coming off a 9-7 loss to the Falmouth Commodores on Sunday. Despite their record, the Anglers have a formidable offense, which was highlighted in the Gatemen’s first meeting with them on June 16, where the Anglers won, 9-2, off a seven-run fourth inning.
This could be a challenge for the Gatemen; however, they are not the same team Chatham faced earlier in the season.
Starting pitchers
On Tuesday, the Gatemen hand the ball off to starter Logan Baisley (FGCU). The right-hander’s last start was against Y-D last Tuesday at Red Wilson Field. In that game, he pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed seven hits, three home runs, five total runs and struck out three batters.
His game started with a first-pitch home run by Brayden Dowd (USC) and snowballed into a high-scoring game. Look for him to come out hot in this start to avenge his previous outing.
On the other side, the Anglers will throw right-hander Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State). Davis is in his second summer on the Cape, and first with the Anglers after playing with Brewster last season. He has appeared in one game this summer against the Harwich Mariners last Tuesday.
In that game, he pitched four innings, allowed one hit, four walks, and struck out seven batters. Tuesday will be his first start of the summer, so look to see how he fares against the Gatemen’s lineup.
Players to watch
Three players impressed in the Gatemen’s win over the Firebirds on Sunday. Kyuss Gargett (Kentucky) went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, the one hit being a solo home run to spark the Gatemen offense in the fifth.
Hayden Yost (Florida) also had a great night, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Easton Breyfogle (Arizona) made his debut on Sunday, going 2 for 3 with a walk and a run. One of those hits was a triple to the right-field fence, so look for him and both Yost and Gargett to make an impact Tuesday.
Chatham has some talented hitters, including Henry Ford (Virginia), who was one of the CCBL all-stars at Citi Field on Monday, and Jackson Freeman (Northwestern), who went 2 for 5 with two runs against the Commodores on Sunday.
With Freeman batting .333 this summer and Ford continuing to shine, the Anglers could find themselves in the win column Tuesday.
First pitch for Tuesday's game will be at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field. You can attend the game for free, or you can tune in to the Gatemen’s radio broadcast with Cory Miller, Josh Richardson and Rayna Maggelet on the call by clicking HERE.
