After toppling the Cape League’s best team, shutting them out for the first time this summer, the Gatemen return home to Spillane Field with their three-game win streak.

Wareham is playing its best ball of 2026 heading into this key divisional matchup against Cotuit: it came out victorious in a continuation game against Falmouth on Monday, put together an offensive masterclass against Orleans, then battled out a pitchers duel at Y-D on Wednesday.

While the Kettleers have fallen in their last two games, they have a slight two-point advantage over the Gatemen in the West Division standings. They split previous matchups against each other this summer, with Cotuit winning at home on Cape Cod Baseball League Opening Day and Wareham grabbing a July victory at home.

Can the Gatemen keep their momentum rolling in this pivotal West Division showdown?

Starting Pitchers: Burnham vs. Lee

Cotuit: Jacob Burnham (Boston College) last pitched in relief against Wareham on Sunday, and he now returns to Spillane Field for his second start of the summer. The Gatemen put up a pair of runs on him and tallied four hits, but Burnham only allowed a single score in his first start of 2026 against the Whitecaps. He hasn’t fully unlocked his swing-and-miss stuff in the Cape League yet, but his 34 K’s this past spring with the Eagles makes him a formidable arm on the mound.

Wareham: After tallying a season-high five strikeouts against Chatham last week, Peyton Lee (Arkansas) makes his fifth start of 2026. The Gatemen snatched their first shutout victory of the summer on Wednesday: Lee can follow this momentum after progressing in control over each appearance. He faces a Kettleers lineup that was also shutout in their previous game and only mustered three hits.

Players To Watch

Kettleers: Although Cotuit only notched three hits in its recent loss to Brewster, it wasn’t

because of Isaac Sturgees (Michigan State). He notched a game-high two base knocks and is now one of 10 Kettleer batters with double-digit hits on the summer. Sturgees wasn’t able to hit home a teammate on Tuesday but has five RBIs in 2026 and succeeds with runners on base.

Gatemen: After tallying a pair of hits in Monday’s game against Orleans, Tony Lira (Arizona) came across on a wild pitch as the only run of the ballgame against Y-D. He immediately picked up on a ball flying into the backstop, and scampered home off of the throwing error. Although he is only a sophomore, Lira has displayed strong baseball IQ throughout the summer: his latest gave Wareham its crucial advantage.
