After an amazing day at Fenway Park on Wednesday, the Gatemen return to the Cape for more Cape Cod baseball. Wareham is feeling good after grabbing their first win of the season and experiencing Fenway Park, carrying some momentum with them for the first time this season.

Now they start another four-game stretch starting with a road trip to Harwich to face the Mariners, who are the defending Cape Cod Baseball League champions.

In 2024, the Gatemen split their season series with the Mariners, going 2-2 against them. Their last matchup ended in a 5-4 victory on July 26.

The Mariners currently sit at 3-1 and are coming off a dominant 6-0 win over the Cotuit Kettleers. The Gatemen will have their work cut out for them if they want to continue this momentum they have built.

Starting Pitchers

Tonight, the Gatemen give the start to right-hander Carson Mayfield (Cornell). Mayfield started in all of his 11 appearances with the Big Red this spring. This season, he posted a 2-2 record with a 4.26 ERA in 61 1/3 innings. He struck out 56 batters and issued 26 walks, holding batters to a .191 batting average.

He started his spring by pitching six scoreless innings en route to an upset over No. 17-ranked Duke. This is Mayfield’s first summer on the Cape, and tonight marks his first start as a Gateman.

The Mariners, on the other hand, will throw Luke McNeillie (Florida). The righty from Milton, GA, pitched in a team-high 28 games with two SEC starts for the Gators.

He ended with a 5-2 record and one save to go with a .230 batting average against and 4.82 ERA. He also fanned a career-high 72 batters against just 24 walks in 52 1/3 innings.

Players to Watch

Vance Sheahan (Miami) had a great game for the Gatemen when they faced the Y-D Red Sox on Tuesday. Sheahan kick-started the offense by grabbing the team’s first home run of the season.

From there, the Gatemen went on to win the game 3-2, in part thanks to an RBI single from Chase Krewson (UCF). Keep an eye on both of these hitters tonight for the Gatemen.

Another Gatemen name to look for is Levi Clark (Tennessee). Clark just arrived in Boston on Wednesday from Knoxville, joining the Gatemen for the first time during their batting practice at Fenway Park.

The catcher batted .289 for the Vols, grabbing 37 hits, 34 RBIs, scoring 30 runs, and hitting 10 home runs. Tonight will be his first game in the Cape Cod Baseball League, and he looks to make an impact.

The Mariners, on the other hand, have two impactful sluggers, Kyle Wolff (Boston College) and Eric Becker (Virginia). Both are batting over .400, with Wolff batting .417 and Becker hitting .455.

Wolff had a great night in Harwich’s 6-0 win over Cotuit, going 3 for 4. Becker went 0 for 1 with 2 walks in that game, but will still be a problem for the Gatemen, as in 11 at-bats this summer, he has 5 hits, 3 RBIs, and has drawn 5 walks. Look for him and Wolff to have strong nights at the plate for Harwich.

First pitch for tonight’s game at Whitehouse Field will be at 6:30 p.m.. You can attend the game and watch it live for free, or you can tune into the Gatemen’s radio broadcast on Cape League TV with Cory Miller, Josh Richardson, and Rayna Maggelet on the call by clicking HERE.
