After a few day stretch filled with weather uncertainties and long road trips, the third off-day of the Cape League calendar provided a reset.
Following this reset, the Gatemen and Commodores meet at Spillane Field for the first time in 2026: both franchises were playoff teams last summer and have expectations for similar on-field success this August.
Wareham has tallied consecutive double-digit hit nights and is finding its footing offensively, but it hasn’t turned into wins just yet with recent late-inning heartbreakers against Harwich and Falmouth over the last five games. The Gatemen are certainly trending in the right direction, and now they can turn those strong outings into wins with 75% of the season still in the balance. Falmouth goes on the road on a skid of its own, losses in two of its last three games, but six second in the division.
Starting Pitchers: Donovan vs. Lambert
Falmouth: Aidan Donovan (Michigan State) was the Commodores’ starter on Cape Cod Baseball League Opening Day, allowing just one earned run and striking out four Firebirds batters in a dominant season-opening performance. This will be his third appearance of the summer after a strong relief appearance against Chatham last weekend.
Wareham: Garrett Lambert (Alabama) makes his third start of the summer against a key West Division opponent after throwing four strong innings against Hyannis last weekend. Lambert can pound the strike zone, and crafts swing-and-miss opportunities thanks to his fastball and offspeed arsenal. He has eight K's this summer and now faces a Commodores squad with the most strikeouts in the CCBL.
Players To Watch
Commodores: Dallas Brooks (UCF) was the hero in the first Wareham/Falmouth matchup of the summer with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning and also notched another hit on the night. Brooks can play behind the dish and as a designated hitter, but his biggest addition comes from the impact bat and over-1.000 OPS.
Gatemen: Wareham’s offensive surge has been in large part to its trio of catchers. Coen Niclai (Arizona State) is a prime example of that with a team-high 10 RBIs and five hits in just seven games. He works counts and consistently gets on base to put the Gatemen in position for offensive success. Niclai has worked his way into the front half of Wareham’s lineup and has worked in tandem with Levi Clark (Tennessee) and Drew Rogers (Georgia Tech) to make the catcher room one of the best in the Cape League.
The last matchup between the Gatemen and Commodores was a wire-to-wire thriller that went into extra innings. There were 21 runs on 26 total hits, and Friday’s rendition of this divisional showdown features two true ace pitchers.
First pitch from Spillane Field is set for 6:00 p.m. on a perfect 70-degree day. Fans can catch the action in-person for free, or tune in on Cape League TV.
