YARMOUTH-DENNIS, Mass. — A blistering hot day at Red Wilson Field turned into a fireworks show — and eventually, a collapse — as the Wareham Gatemen fell, 13-7, to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Monday evening, dropping to one game below .500 on the season.
The Gatemen (4-5) matched Y-D (6-2-1) swing for swing through the first five innings in a back-and-forth contest that featured 25 total hits and five home runs — the most in a game this summer for Wareham. But the Red Sox pulled away late, scoring four runs across the final three innings while Wareham’s bats went silent.
Pitching wasn’t at its peak — as expected — with Red Wilson Field’s short fence (375 feet to dead center) and swirling winds favoring hitters.
"For the pitchers, it was about getting ahead in counts, working inside and keeping the ball down," Gatemen head coach Ryan Smyth said. "We did that at times tonight, but the wind was really howling out, so the ball was carried. It is what it is — same field for both teams. We caught a break a couple times, too; they just had one or two more go their way."
Starter Logan Baisley (FGCU) had an eventful outing. His very first pitch was taken deep by Brayden Dowd (USC) for his first home run of the year. Baisley bounced back with a dominant second inning and escaped a jam in the third, but his night unraveled in the fourth after allowing back-to-back homers. He exited after 3 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and five earned runs.
Caden McDonald (Florida) came on in relief and took the loss after giving up four hits and four runs in one inning. He was one of five pitchers to appear for the Gatemen. Josh Butler (Arizona State) allowed two runs in the fifth, Shea Wendt (Creighton) tossed a clean seventh, Gavin Black (Mississippi State) was tagged for three runs in the eighth, and Lazaro Collera (Miami) made his Gatemen debut to finish the game, allowing one earned run and four total to cross.
Despite the loss, the offense came alive early. In the second inning, Ty Dalley (Clemson) singled on the first pitch he saw, eventually getting thrown out at home on a controversial play Smyth argued involved a blocked plate.
"I just thought, by rule — and I know it’s a judgment call — that he was blocking the plate without the ball and didn’t give him a clear path," Smyth said. "The two came together, and the umpires huddled up, made a decision, and I’m OK with that."
Dalley made his impact felt again in the third with an RBI double to tie the game at one. A wild pitch soon after brought Brayden Randle (Ole Miss) home to give Wareham a 2-1 lead.
Dalley later added a single in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and his first strikeout of the season in the ninth. He continues to be a force for Wareham, slashing .324/.375/.486 through nine games.
"I didn’t see many pitches on those hits — I think each one came on the first pitch," Dalley said. "But they were over the plate, and I felt like I could get a good swing on them and drive a runner in."
"You can just tell Dalley is a team guy," Smyth added. "We were down two, and they had a heavy shift on him. He went backside for a single — and for a guy who’d been locked in all night, in a small ballpark, he could’ve gone up there swinging for himself. But instead, he chose to get on base and bring the tying run to the plate. That tells you everything you need to know about him."
The biggest offensive fireworks came in the fifth. After Dalley's third hit of the night, McDonald, now pitching, tied the game with his first home run of the summer. Moments later, Chris McHugh (NC State) followed with a towering shot of his own — his first hit of the season after joining the team Sunday — to give the Gatemen a brief 6-5 lead.
That lead was short-lived. The Red Sox responded in their half of the fifth with three straight singles to load the bases and took advantage with a four-run inning. The Gatemen didn't score again after Dalley’s RBI in the sixth.
Wareham’s final opportunity came in the ninth. Levi Clark (Tennessee) was robbed of extra bases on a liner to left, Dalley struck out, and Mac Rose (Vanderbilt) drew a pinch-hit walk before the final out was recorded with no runs scored.
Thirty-one games remain on the Cape League schedule. The Gatemen return home Tuesday to face the Orleans Firebirds at 6 p.m. at Spillane Field.
