Harwich was back in action after a two-day hiatus because their Tuesday matchup against Hyannis got postponed. Harwich hosted the Wareham Gatemen on Wednesday. The Gatemen got the best of the Mariners in their first matchup after a six-run inning in the bottom of the ninth to spoil the Mariners five-game win streak.
Riley Goodman was the starter for the Mariners Wednesday night. The right-hander made his first start against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks last week where he would pitch four innings, allowed three hits, and strike out seven.
Goodman would give up his first run of his Cape career in the top of the first inning after Wareham’s Coen Niclai would hit a single to the opposite field to score one. Niclai has had the Mariners’ number in the beginning of the season. Niclai hit the walk-off grand slam for the Gatemen Saturday night to end the Mariners five game winning streak.
It was a low scoring affair during tonight's game where it felt like runs were coming at a premium. The Mariners evened things up at one apiece after outfielder Colin Larson stole third and home after a throwing error. Wareham soon regained the lead after a Henry DiGiorgo double.
Goodman finished his second start after five innings with seven strikeouts and only two runs allowed. Goodman is now second in The Cape Cod Baseball League in strikeouts with 14. Goodman credits his improvement to his slider for his early season success.
“The slider's been really good this summer, but I came into it trying to fill up the zone. After the season, that was something I struggled with, so that's been a big focus for me."

Quinton Coats tied the game for Harwich after a hard hit groundball got past Wareham's third baseman. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe went on to score.
Both teams seemed to never break the game open tonight. Wareham’s Niclai got his second RBI of the night after a hard hit grounder to short, scoring one Gateman. Harwichs Colin Larson in the bottom of the seventh hit his first home run of the season to tie up the game.
"It was pretty cool. I'm not trying to swing for the fences, I'm just trying to get the barrel on the ball as much as possible and let the results take care of themselves," said Larson.
Late Inning Rally
The Mariners did not take their first lead until the eighth inning when recent edition Mariner Chone James mashed a ball to right field to score Cade Kurland from second. The Mariners’ bats woke up big time in the eighth inning. Larson’s single would give the Mariners more insurance adding to their lead.
Jason Krieger finished off the Gatemen in the final 2.2 innings. Krieger didn't allow a run in the final innings to earn the save. This is back-to-back performance for the righty where he completely shut down the opponents bats.
"We pitched a little better, got some timely hits, and that was the difference in the game," recalled Coach Steve Englert.
What's Next?
Harwich will travel to Hyannis on Thursday for a makeup game following Tuesday's postponement.
First Pitch is set for 6 p.m.
