When a team is struggling for wins, it can seem like it can’t catch a break. Mariner batters came ready to end the two-game losing, taking the lead twice against the Wareham Gatemen.

Unfortunately, the red hot Gatemen could not be stopped. Wareham hit three home runs off Harwich pitching, winning 13-8 for its sixth straight win Wednesday night. The Mariners lost for the fourth time in the last five games.

Tom Chmielewski, Thomas Shurtleff and Christian Rodriguez all came into the game with ERA’s under 2.50 and all three gave up a home run.

The Mariners lost a flyball in the sun in both the first and second innings, allowing Wareham to score four unearned runs off Chmielewski.

Making his first start, Chmielewski battled around the miscues. After the four-run second inning, the lefty put the Gatemen down in order in the third and fourth innings.

Down 5-2, the Mariner offense came alive to score five unanswered runs. Aiden Robbins slugged a two-run home run to narrow the deficit. It was his homer of the season. He went 2-5 on the night.

Harwich took the lead, 7-5 on a two-RBI single by Tre Broussard in the fourth, scoring Matt Conte and Jake Koonin. The Cape League All-Star recorded two hits on the night.

Eight Mariners recorded a hit on the night.

Harwich’s bullpen could not hold onto the lead. Wareham scored eight runs off Mariner relievers.
