HARWICH, Mass. -- The Harwich Mariners offense exploded on red shirt Friday, as the M’s crushed the Brewster Whitecaps 21-4. Harwich erupted for nine runs in the second inning on their way to an astounding 21 runs on 21 hits.
The Mariners were down to their final out of the second inning when Bryan Arendt (UNCW) reached base on an infield single and Cameron Leary (Boston College) reached on an error. The Whitecaps gave the Mariners two second chances, and Harwich made no mistake to capitalize on it.
Kevin Keister (Maryland) delivered the first big blow of the monster inning for Harwich with a three-run double down the right field line. Keister’s ball one-hopped the wall and was fumbled by the Brewster right fielder which gave all three runners a chance to score.
Keister had one of many phenomenal batting lines on the night, finishing the night going 2-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Ali Camarillo (Texas A&M) ripped a two-run single in the inning, contributing to a great night at the plate for a guy who has been one of the hottest bats in the lineup of late. Camarillo finished the game 3-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Jacob Humphrey (UMass Lowell), Elijah Lambros (Maryland), Devin Obee (Duke) and Cam Leary all had RBI hits in the inning as well.
“That was unbelievable, I’ve never seen that,” head coach Steve Englert said. “That was quite impressive. Two outs, nobody on and you throw up a nine-spot, that’s impressive.”
As impressive as their nine-run inning was, the Mariners scored another 12 runs across the rest of the game. Every batter in the Harwich lineup had at least one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.
Devin Obee hit a 433 ft home run in the eighth inning, the farthest home run of the season by a Mariner. Obee had four hits on the night with five RBI and remains the Mariners most consistent bat.
“That was an absolute bomb,” Englert said. “That was a big boy home run”
As much as the offense was the main story of Friday night’s contest, the Mariners were treated to some strong pitching, specifically from Jake Neuman (Central Connecticut), who pitched 4.1 innings in relief, only allowing one hit on no runs. This was Neuman’s longest outing of the season and certainly one that will help build his confidence as the playoffs loom in the near future.
Ethan Anderson (Virginia) racked up four hits on the night, a positive trend for one of the most talented bats in the lineup that has struggled this season.
Harwich amazingly only put up the second most runs in the Cape League tonight, with Falmouth dropping an astounding 27 runs on Cotuit.
The Mariners couldn’t have asked for anything better on a humid late July night in Harwich, and they will surely take their 21 runs and run. The ‘Ners will get back after it tomorrow afternoon when they take on Y-D for the final time this season at Red Wilson Field. First pitch is slated for 4:30 P.M.
