WAREHAM, Mass. -- The Harwich Mariners trip across the bridge was an unsuccessful one on Wednesday night, as they fell by a score of 5-4 to the Wareham Gatemen. For the second night in a row the Mariners surrendered a late game lead, leading to a loss.

Kevin Keister (Maryland) stepped up to the plate in the top of the ninth with runners on second and third and two outs with the Mariners down 5-3. Keister ripped a single to right field, driving in the first run, but Talmadge LeCroy (South Carolina) was thrown out at the plate to end the game in wild fashion.

With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Dax Dathe (Angelo State) was on the bump looking to maintain the tie. Dathe delivered a two-strike pitch with two outs that snuck past Bryan Arendt (UNCW) behind the plate, allowing the Wareham runner on third base to come in to score.

Dathe struck out the batter on the next pitch, but the damage was done. Wareham was able to hold its 4-3 lead to win the game.

Dominic Picone (St. Josephs) delivered one of the better pitching performances by a Mariner this season, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing four runs. Though he is on the hook for the loss, Picone competed on the mound and gave the Mariner lineup every chance to stay in the game.

Danniel Rivera (Kansas State) had another good night, driving in a run in the fifth inning to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead at the time. Rivera crushed a double to the deepest part of the ballpark, what surely would’ve been a home run had he hit it anywhere else.

The Mariners will have an off day tomorrow and attempt to get back in the win column on Friday night when they take on Brewster at Whitehouse Field at 6:30.
