The Harwich Mariners fell by a score of 4-3 to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on a chilly Saturday night at Whitehouse field. The Red Sox scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning after overcoming a 3-0 deficit, securing a comeback victory and moving to 1-1 on the season against Harwich.
Cole Wisenbaker came in to relieve starter Griffin Kirn in the sixth inning and was able to battle out of a jam, keeping the game tied at 3-3. Wisenbaker stayed in until the ninth, when he gave up two base hits to start the inning, at which point Harwich manager Steve Englert turned to the bullpen once again, this time bringing in J.T. Gibson.
Inheriting the two runners on base, Gibson made quick work of his first batter, striking out Jake Brown on four pitches. After going down 2-0 on the next batter, Ryan Sprock, Gibson allowed a single to left field. Harwich left fielder Matt Scannell threw a dart to home plate in an attempt to throw the runner out, but it came in just late and Y-D was up, 4-3.
Gibson stranded the last two runners and limited the damage, but the Mariners were unable to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Harwich picked up two of its runs on mishaps from the Y-D fielders. Michael Anderson scored the first run after a balk from Y-D pitcher Kellan Montgomery while Anderson occupied third base. Macon Winslow then scored a batter later on a wild pitch.
Griffin Kirn was once again efficient in his second start of the season for the Mariners, going 5 1/3 innings, only allowing two hits and two runs, neither of which were earned.
The Mariners are back on the field Sunday night in Falmouth when they take on the Commodores for the first time this season. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at Guv Fuller Field.
