Jack Arcamone recorded two hits in Monday’s game, a 6–5 loss to the Wareham Gatemen. The 6'1" catcher has played only two games for the Y-D Red Sox, but he's made an impact in both appearances.
During his sophomore year at the University of Richmond, Arcamone posted a 155 wRC+ and a .675 slugging percentage. He hit 13 home runs and drove in 62 runs over 52 games. While he does strike out frequently, a 15.7% walk rate helped him achieve an impressive .463 on-base percentage.
On Friday night, he hit a home run to right field in his first at-bat with Y-D. The longball gave him two RBIs on the summer, immediately producing at the top of the lineup. Even though he didn’t go deep on Monday, his performance against Wareham was much better than his debut.
Arcamone came to the plate in the third inning with the bases loaded, looking to help Y-D chip away at what had been a five-run deficit entering the frame. After fouling off the first two pitches and falling into an 0-2 hole, the Connecticut native battled back to work a full count. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, he drove a changeup into center field, plating two runs.
“The pitcher was throwing sinkers, a little movement away, so I wasn’t trying to do too much. Then I ended up getting out in front of a changeup and put it over the second baseman’s head,” Arcamone said. “[I] felt good today. [I] was just trying to keep the ball up the middle of the field and help the team win games.”
Chris Hacopian followed with a double in the next at-bat, scoring Arcamone as Y-D's fourth run of the game. When Arcamone came up again in the seventh inning, he stayed aggressive, punching the first pitch he saw the other way into left field.
Quick production has been a theme for Y-D all season, with several new additions making an immediate impact. Arcamone has been no exception—his strong bat has given fans hope that Y-D can return to the win column. One possible reason for these hot starts is the Y-D coaching staff and roster, which many players have praised as outstanding to work with.
“Everyone’s been super welcoming. The coaches have been awesome, just letting me get my feet wet here,” Arcamone said on Monday evening. “It means a lot to come in and start hitting in the two-spot two games in a row. It’s pretty exciting stuff, and hopefully we can turn this thing around a little bit.”
